OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
The substitute school nurse works with the school nurse to deliver nursing care to
students and staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides nursing tasks as directed by the RN including medication administration, insulin administration and medical procedures (G-tube feedings, Clean Intermittent Catheterization, blood glucose testing, etc.)
  • Provides first aid, emergency services and routine care as necessary for students, staff, and visitors, including initial assessment, appropriate care for illness and injuries according to the Department of Health “Guidelines for Illness and Injury at School,” and/or emergency care plans, notify parents of illness/injury, and contact 911, as indicated.
  • Maintains a variety of health-related records.
  • Stocks supplies in the health room, as necessary
  • Maintains on-going communication with school nurse to report findings and receive ongoing direction and support.
  • Performs health screening (vision/hearing/scoliosis) with volunteer groups and, when necessary, trains volunteers or staff to conduct screenings.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate to specific assignment.
  • May attend field trips with students who have healthcare needs requiring a licensed nurse.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety, a positive and safe learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
  • Consults with staff regarding any problems with medical procedures for students. Reports students with contagious diseases to local and/or other public health authorities for the purpose of complying with legal reporting requirements

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of care and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment.
  2. Knowledge of first aid and CPR.
  3. Knowledge of both normal and abnormal anatomy, physiology, psycho/social, and disease entities.
  4. Ability to communicate in person, writing, or on the phone, with students, staff, parents, and volunteers in adiverse environment.
  5. Ability to work under pressure, adjust to varied situations, demands and new health issues.
  6. Ability to learn and integrate policies and procedures adopted by the school building, the District and the State of Washington.
  7. Ability to be entrusted with confidential and sensitive information.
  8. Ability to operate standard office equipment and use of Word, Excel, Email and related tools.
  9. Knowledge of the principles and practices of aseptic/sterile techniques and infectious disease control.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Washington State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.
  2. Previous experience working with school-age children preferred.
  3. Background check, fingerprinting, and sexual misconduct disclosure release.

CERTIFICATE & LICENSES

  1. Washington State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.
  2. Valid First Aid and CPR Card
  3. Valid Driver’s License and Evidence of Insurability.
  • RN, Registered Nurse $35
  • LPN, Licensed Practical Nurse $31

WORKING ENVIRONMENT 
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:
occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some
stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally, the job requires 60%
sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing.  The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and
in a clean atmosphere with some exposure to infectious diseases.
